Many times I’ve gotten caught up working hard, putting in the extra hours, convincing myself that “I’m doing this for my family.”
Nothing wrong with making money.
Nothing wrong with wanting to provide a certain lifestyle for our kids.
Nothing wrong with leaving our kids an inheritance and creating generational wealth.
However…
“Legacy is not leaving something for people.
It’s leaving something in people.”
Peter Strople
Legacy is the ripple effect of your actions and your impact on others, not the money or possessions you leave behind.
The question is, “What are you depositing in the people that you care about most?”
I recently had a conversation with a high-level leader who had her best year in 2024. She’s constantly thinking of ways to uplevel her leaders and improve the business. And she’s making a lot of money in the process.
After she was recounting all her accomplishments from the year, I celebrated with her and then stopped her in her tracks with this question:
-What if you devoted 10% of the energy you currently spend thinking about how to grow your business or develop your leaders and focused it on how to grow the relationships with your kids or your spouse?
She was silent…for a long time.
Then with a tear in her eye, she said, “It would be life-changing”
I’m not trying to make you feel guilty.
I’m simply asking a question I find equally convicting because I know you need it too.
Your legacy is the impact you have on the lives of people closest to you, not the money you make. That’s the only thing on this earth that will live on after you’re long gone.
What’s one small action you could take today that would cause a ripple effect in one relationship that matters to you? Take that step.
