In Part 1 of this series, we named the tension you’ve probably felt but don’t know what to do about; more success hasn’t silenced that inner restlessness.
In Part 2, we exposed the reality that ambition isn’t the problem; the problem is what fuels the ambition. We explored the difference between Restless and Rested Ambition.
Today, we explore Part 3, where I’ll confront the real reason most high achievers never make the shift from Restless to Rested Ambition: a subconscious fear and a subtle lie that hold them back.
THE FEAR
All of the success you’ve attained up to this point has primarily come from hustling, grinding, and operating from a place of pressure. You’re the MASTER of creating success from that place.
The truth is, this mindset has been a powerful and successful tool, yet you’re starting to see the cost of operating that way (your peace).
The problem? You believe the whole system that’s provided your current level of success breaks down if you embrace the idea of pursuing peace and contentment.
You’re afraid that, “If I’m content, I’ll lose my edge, I’ll become lazy and complacent.”
EXPOSING THE LIE
You couldn’t be complacent if you tried.
People who run ultra marathons don’t need to fear becoming lazy, they need to watch out for overtraining. Similarly, as a high achiever, what you need to watch out for is overwork not underwork.
Be honest, you will never have to worry about becoming lazy.
It’s true that in the past, your “edge” came from your relentless commitment to never slowing down.
But just because one strategy has worked to create results, doesn’t mean there isn’t an equal or superior strategy out there that creates even higher-level results.
THE TRUTH
Peace is not passive.
Rest doesn’t lead to idleness.
You won’t lose your edge by living from a place of rest; you’ll sharpen it.
Contentment doesn’t make you complacent, it sets you free to perform your best.
In Matthew 11:28-29, when Jesus says “I will give you rest,” He isn’t calling us into a life of laziness void of ambition. And He’s not even talking about physical rest.
He’s talking about rest “for our souls”.
THAT is the rest we all long for.
For the restless entrepreneur,
He’s calling us into a posture of surrender.
He’s not telling you to squelch your ambition or lower your standards.
He’s calling you to a higher standard – to work from your rest (in Him) not for it (in your performance).
He knows you’ll never be able to truly rest unless you surrender to the idea that measuring up is not the goal.
TRUE rest never leads to laziness; it releases real, joyful labor because grace has freed the will from the relentless need to perform for your worth.
Fear is a powerful motivator.
You can accomplish a lot using fear as your primary motivator…
However, a peace-filled confidence that doesn’t tie your worth to outcomes is a FAR more powerful fuel for high performance.
Only then are you truly free to take risks, to fail, to give your best effort – because you’re not afraid of losing what’s already eternally secured for you in Christ.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
So, what does this actually look like?
How do you build something great without burning out?
How do you operate from peace… without becoming passive?
That’s what we’ll explore in Part 4 of this series.
