In the early days of your business, you had a fire in your belly; but today, it feels different.
You’re thankful for what you have but if you’re honest, you’re a bit bored. You go through the motions of setting goals, but in reality, they don’t excite you anymore. Exceeding targets doesn’t give you the same “hit” it used to.
Sure, you like making money and you’re quite good at it, but at this stage, more money simply is no longer the motivator it once was.
And the worst part? You don’t feel like yourself. You’ve always been driven to build it bigger and better and reach that next milestone; but now, you’re not so sure.
Where’s the hunger and intensity?
Where’s the drive to push past the point you’ve built it and get to the next level?
And yet, you also wrestle with the question: “When is enough, enough?”
What’s the point of building it bigger?
You’re trapped between whether you ought to be “happy where you are” or push for more. But standing in the middle feels like death. You don’t want to settle but you don’t have the juice to drive it further.
You’re in the “Entrepreneurial Arc” – which every high-achieving entrepreneur goes through at some point in their journey.
Every entrepreneur who reaches true financial success eventually faces this arc. Once money stops being the fuel, you either stall or you evolve into a new level of drive that propels you forward.

- Provision (Fuel: Necessity)
In the early days, you’re driven to provide, protect, and prove. Success is seen as financial security, survival, and stability.
- Plateau (Fuel: Momentum, until it runs out)
You’ve “made it.” Money flows, the business is steady, but the thrill is gone & goals feel hollow. You can stay here if you choose (it’s comfortable) but for most high achievers, it feels like coasting.
- Purpose (Fuel: Impact)
Drive reignites, not from money like the past but from meaning. Success is measured by who you develop, the lives you change, the mission you advance & your shift is from self to others.
*There is a 4th stage (below) but that’s not depicted on the image above because it’s not the focus of this article. However, here’s a bit of intel on that stage:
- Posterity (Fuel: Legacy)
Beyond Purpose lies Posterity. Here, the work outlives you. You’re no longer building just for yourself or even for your time—you’re embedding ideas, systems, and people who will carry it forward.
So how do you go from Plateau to Purpose?
3 steps:
- Redefine the game
Plateaus happen because you’ve already “won” the game you were playing. You need to define a new game worth playing. A game that’s bigger than yourself and centered around impact and developing others to become better than yourself.
- Shift your metrics of success
Don’t focus goals around revenue; focus goals around the ripple effects you want to make in the lives of customers or how many leaders you develop to the next level.
- The third step to going from Plateau to Purpose is always unique to the individual
