You Need An 80/20 Audit

Here are two truths you may not like but likely need to hear:

  • You don’t have too much to accomplish.
  • You don’t need more time or to manage your time better.
Your problem isn’t a lack of time or needing to better manage your time; you need to stop spending your time in low-quality ways.

And so do I.

The Pareto Principle (also known as the 80/20 rule) states that a small number of causes lead to a majority of the results. Roughly 20% of what you do produces 80% of your results and therefore 80% of what you do is largely irrelevant.

Studies for decades have validated this principle in nearly all aspects of life and business. But if you don’t slow down to identify elements of each category, you’ll be stuck attending to the trivial many (tasks) rather than the vital few, stifling your ability to accelerate your success while reducing your effort.

What you need is an 80/20 audit.

An 80/20 audit helps you clarify what’s creating the majority of your results and find ways to double-down on THOSE clients, those actions, those strategies, etc. And the best part is, once you know that, you can work less while generating more.

Once you have this awareness, you control what you do with those insights.

My recommendation is to answer a few of the following questions and see what you notice about those responses. Then ask how you might shift how you’re currently investing your time based upon those realizations. You can do this 80/20 audit in any area of your life/business.

  1. Which 20% of my clients generate 80% of my revenue?
  2. What types of clients (the 20%) create 80% of my headaches?
  3. What are the 20% of tasks or activities that consume 80% of my time or energy?
  4. Which 20% of my skills, expertise, or knowledge contribute to 80% of the value I bring to my organization?
  5. What 20% of my relationships create 80% of the fulfillment I experience?
  6. Which 20% of my products, services, or offerings contribute to 80% of my profits?
  7. Which 20% of my marketing and sales activities generate 80% of my leads or conversions?

As your organization grows, so does your list of responsibilities. All the more reason for us to be deliberate about where we choose to invest our time and energy.

An 80/20 audit helps you stay clear on what truly matters and choose to either delegate or ignore the rest.

As leaders, our team cannot afford for us to be activity-rich and quality-poor in how we invest our time.
