Your Assumptions are COSTING You

Your Assumptions are COSTING You

When I walk through the door, our two dogs always greet me. Except, for some reason, today they didn’t.

After a few minutes of searching, I eventually found them lying down together on our bed. As I peeked over the covers to get a better look at them, I discovered THIS…

One of our dogs had either pooped or thrown up in our bed!

Man…of all places! Then I started smelling it. It smelled AWFUL…

My immediate thought was: “Pretend you didn’t see this and let Jenny ‘discover’ it when she gets home so she can clean it up!”

After deciding not to go that route, I eventually muster up the courage to face cleaning up this disgusting mess on the bed.

I went to the bathroom and grabbed a huge wad of toilet paper, walked over towards the bed and as I started to pick it up, I realized to my surprise…

It’s not poop or throw up. It’s my wife’s brown scrunchie.

I felt relief but also a little embarrassed that I was so worked up over something that really was nothing at all.

The most dangerous part about making assumptions is that we often aren’t aware we’re making them. We think our assumptions are reality.

Not only that, we also underestimate the destructive power our assumptions can have in our business, on ourselves, and on others.

The assumptions you’re making right now in your business are costing you. Here’s one common assumption I see entrepreneurs and leaders make, they’re often unaware of:

Completing this project, this goal, or solving this problem is going to be really difficult.

How many times have you caught yourself delaying a project, pushing back a goal, or not attempting to solve an issue in your business because you’ve conjured up in your mind that it’s going to be a lot of work to make it happen?

I find myself doing that all the time.

However, what I find interesting is, as we take even small steps of action toward it, we realize there was nothing to be hesitant about in the first place.

We’ve imagined in our mind that it’s MUCH bigger than it really is. If we simply start to take action on it, we’ll realize it was far simpler to achieve the outcome we wanted than we would have otherwise imagined.

  • Where are you hesitating to take action in your business?
  • What’s one issue or project you’ve had on your list to tackle for MONTHS or even YEARS?
  • What’s one small step you could take toward completing that this week?

I promise it’ll feel far less daunting once you start walking toward it rather than standing where you are and assuming what it’s going to be like.

Things are often not as they appear to be, so stop assuming you know and start taking steps towards the situation so you can deal with what IS rather than what your imagination has fabricated.
